Strap Clamp Plans

It’s not often that you can actually save money by building your own clamps, but I think this is the exception. The retail version of these clamps is not inexpensive, and the build quality is not hard to beat, since it’s almost entirely made from plastic. This one is made from solid hardwood and the design is optimized to get the maximum strength from that material.

It uses commonly available parts and hardware, much of which you may have on hand already if you have an active shop.

These excel for odd shaped objects that would be next to impossible to hold using ordinary clamps:

And the performance is as good or better than the retail version. Since you made it yourself, if it breaks you can always fix it. Or just make a new one.

Feel free to look through the detailed build article for this project to see if it’s right for you.

The plans consist of:

  • a materials list
  • an overview drawing
  • 2 parts map drawings showing part names and locations
  • 5 detailed parts drawings showing all of the dimensions
  • 7 assembly drawings that go through the build process step by step

The plans are easy to follow and all of the dimensions are in both imperial and metric, with the metric dimensions (millimeters) in brackets. Screw sizes and other hardware are in imperial units.

Please read these important notes before buying these plans.
